How to Stay Safe from Typhoid During Monsoon

Typhoid is a bacterial infection that spreads through contaminated food and water, especially during the monsoon when hygiene levels can drop. It causes high fever, weakness, stomach pain and sometimes rashes. However, the good thing is typhoid is preventable. Here’s how you can stay safe from it this season…

1. Drink Boiled or Filtered Water

Typhoid bacteria often spread through unsafe drinking water. Always drink water that is either boiled, filtered or mineral packaged water. Avoid drinking local streetside water as much as possible.

2. Wash Fruits and Vegetables Thoroughly

Contaminated raw foods are a common reason for typhoid. Ensure you wash all fruits and vegetables properly under clean running water. Soaking them in salt water for a few minutes helps too.

3. Eat Fresh, Home-Cooked Meals

Avoid eating from roadside vendors during the rainy season. Street food, especially uncooked or uncovered items like chaat or cut fruits, as they can be risky. Stick to fresh, hot meals cooked at home.

4. Practice Good Hand Hygiene

Always wash your hands with soap before eating and after using the toilet. If soap and water aren’t available, use a hand sanitizer.

5. Don’t Ignore Symptoms

High fever, stomach pain, loss of appetite and weakness are common typhoid symptoms. If you experience any of these, consult a doctor immediately and avoid self-medication.
